Hyderabad: Telangana forms 8-member committee to transform Osmania University into world-class institute
Hyderabad: Telangana government has constituted an 8-member expert committee to transform Osmania University into world-class institute.
The committee will be chaired by IAS officer A Devasena.
The committee’s mandate is to devise a comprehensive strategy for the optimal utilization of OU’s extensive land resources (which span nearly 1,600 acres) and to prioritize specific projects that will accelerate the university's global ranking and research output.
The initiative for OU
This initiative follows Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's announcement during his visit to the campus in August 2025. CM Revanth Reddy had announced an investment of Rs 1000 crore towards comprehensive development. He was the first CM in 30 years to visit the camps, where he inaugurated new hostel buildings, launched key academic support mechanisms, and also announced CM Ph.D and Overseas Fellowship schemes.
CM Revanth Reddy made it clear that his government is committed to academic excellence in OU.
He also insisted that OU must be developed on par with global institutions like Stanford and Oxford University.
Strategic Benchmarking at IIT Hyderabad
In a crucial and proactive step preceding final recommendations, key members of the committee conducted a strategic visit to IIT Hyderabad. The delegation included A. Devasena, CCE/CТЕ; Prof. Kumar Molugaram, VC, OU; Ganapathi Reddy, MD, EWIDC; Prof. Basharat Ali, Professor of Practice, Department of Civil Engineering, OU; Prof. K.V.L.Subrahmanyam, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT, Hyderabad; and Prof. Thirupathi Rao, former VC, OU.
The members received a comprehensive presentation from the Director of IIT Hyderabad, Prof B S Murty, gaining a first-hand understanding of the benchmarking standards and best practices that enabled the institution to grow from humble beginnings to a world-class institute. This engagement ensures OU’s development plan will be grounded in proven models of organizational success and academic excellence, particularly in infrastructure, research focus, and operational efficiency.
Accelerated Deadline
The Expert Committee is operating under an accelerated timeline and is scheduled to submit its Comprehensive Action Plan to the Government by the second week of November 2025. This swift timeline underscores the State Government's priority in fostering academic excellence and generating world-class research capabilities within Telangana, positioning OU as the intellectual heart of the state once more.
