Telangana jail reforms: 28 inmates complete graduation from BRAOU
Of the graduates, 25 are men and three are women, marking a significant step in prison reform through education

Hyderabad: As many as 28 inmates from various prisons across the State have completed their undergraduate programmes from Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU).
The announcement came during the 26th Convocation Ceremony held in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Of the graduates, 25 are men and three are women, marking a significant step in prison reform through education.
Convocation ceremony highlights
A total of 13 members connected to prisons participated in the convocation ceremony. This included nine serving inmates, eight from Cherlapalli Central Prison and one from Central Prison Hyderabad, and four released prisoners, three from Cherlapalli and one from the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad.
They received their graduation certificates from the Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, in the presence of officials and dignitaries.
DG Prisons applauds efforts
Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Dr. Soumya Mishra, lauded the graduates for their perseverance. "Their determination and hard work reflect the true spirit of transformation. Education is a powerful tool for reformation and responsible reintegration into society,” she said, urging inmates to continue their journey of self-improvement.
Education as Reform
The Prisons Department underscored that reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programmes are being actively conducted in all jails with the aim of making prisoners constructive and responsible individuals.
The success of these graduates is seen as a direct outcome of sustained correctional efforts, supported by the BRAOU study centre at Cherlapalli Central Prison.
A Milestone in Correctional Services
Officials described the inmates’ achievement as more than an academic success, a testimony to the belief that transformation is possible through knowledge, dignity of labour, and opportunities for a hopeful future.
The Telangana Prisons Department congratulated all graduates, expressing pride in their accomplishment, which it termed a “milestone in the mission of correctional services.”
