Telangana Police ink MoU with BRAOU to help 30k cops pursue graduation through distance mode
Hyderabad: Good news for nearly 30,000 constables and head constables in Telangana who have not completed their degrees!
In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Telangana Police have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) to provide distance education opportunities to cops for completing graduation within five years.
The MoU was signed at the Telangana Police Headquarters by Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender and BRAOU Registrar Dr L Vijaya Krishna Reddy, in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof Ganta Chakrapani and senior police officials.
Graduation for All
Speaking on the occasion, DGP Jitender said the department had identified nearly 30,000 personnel without graduation. āOur goal is that within the next five years, every member of the Telangana Police should be a graduate. This is not just about getting a degree, itās about building skills and capabilities to serve citizens better,ā he said.
A model for other states
The DGP added that the initiative would not only strengthen policing standards in Telangana but could also inspire similar programmes in other states. āHyderabad is a cosmopolitan and fast-growing IT hub. We want our policemen to be the best in the country,ā he emphasised.
The agreement covers all non-graduate personnel in the ranks of Police Constable, Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), and Assistant Reserve Sub-Inspector (ARSI) across all branches and wings of the force.
Currently, the minimum educational qualification for recruitment as a Police Constable is Intermediate, whereas earlier it was Class 10. Personnel who joined with the previous qualification can now obtain a degree under this new initiative, the DGP said.
Customised six-semester degree programme
With BRAOUās support, a six-semester degree programme has been designed with subjects tailored to policing needs, including soft skills, office automation, public administration, perception management, policing skills, and life skills.
"These courses will not only award a degree but also improve skills and competencies, enabling personnel to deliver better service to the people of Telangana. It will also instill self-respect and contribute to competence building, continuous learning, and improved policing," Jitender said.
Special classes and training facilities
BRAOU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ganta Chakrapani said, in addition to degree courses, special training classes would be organised. Study centres and police training facilities across Telangana will be used to deliver the programme. āIf the entire police force becomes graduates, it will create a positive impact on society at large,ā Prof Chakrapani noted.
