2018 movie review: An emotional ride that will have you on the edge of your seat
The film is based on the floods that hit Kerala in 2018. That year, floods washed away the entire state, not just one or two districts or villages
By Bhavana Published on 26 May 2023 2:15 PM GMTHyderabad: Malayalam movies have found a wide audience around the country. Especially after the advent of OTT and the lockdown that had people explore movies in other languages, people have become more aware of Malayalam movies. In the meantime, many good films have released in the theatres. One such movie is ā2018ā which released in Malayalam on 12 May and collected Rs 100 crores at the box office in Kerala. The Telugu version of the movie released this Friday. Here is our review:
Story
The film is based on the floods that hit Kerala in 2018. That year, floods washed away the entire state, not just one or two districts or villages. Many lost their possessions and entire savings. After the floods, many people faced hardships as they had no house to return to or food to eat. Those who went to save people from death themselves lost their lives. The directors and producers have filmed these events with the help of some of the best performers.
Analysis
Unlike other movies, ā2018ā does not have any commercial elements to entertain the audience. No duets or fights. The movie is based on a true story. Many fishermen, doctors, police officers, government officials, and soldiers fought to save stranded people that day and the movie is dedicated to them. It is a tribute.
Now, letās talk about the actors. Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Lal, Aparna Balamurali, Kunchako Babin, and Naren make up the cast. Everyone has delivered an excellent performance.
Jude Antony Joseph, the director, does not start the movie with the floods. Instead, he talks about the lives of various people in the town and how the rain that started as a drizzle grew into a flood that lasted for days. The characters are written and portrayed well.
Graphics were used in a few scenes. Many visuals taken by the media at the time of the incident were also used. Not only that but in a small village in Kerala, they built walls so high that no one could reach them. Houses were built and filled with water for the flood scenes.
The way the director has written the story and introduced the characters is amazing. From the very first scene, the audience will connect with the characters. ā2018ā is a must-watch for everyone this weekend.
