Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday suspended the state government's order to reduce the price of movie tickets in the state.
The advocates of theater owners argued that the government has no power to reduce movie ticket prices and the theater owners have the right to increase the prices during the release of a film.
The High Court agreed with the arguments of the petitioner and suspended the order (GO 35).
It may be recalled that the Andhra Pradesh government had issued an order in April this year to reduce the prices of movie tickets.
The film industry had expressed its dissatisfaction with the move and several biggies from the industry had urged the government to reconsider the issue and explained the situation to Chief Minister Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy and minister Perni Nani on various occasions.
Despite repeated requests from the film industry, the AP government did not back down and minister Perni Nani explained that the ticket rates were being hiked at the time of the release of big movies and the decision was taken to control it.
It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the HC verdict.
