Complaint filed against Bigg Boss in Hyderabad for alleged vulgar content

Hyderabad: Two Telangana residents have lodged a complaint at the Jubilee Hills Police Station against the ongoing season of the television reality show Bigg Boss.

They alleged that the show, being aired on Star Maa and OTT platforms, promotes obscenity, indecent behaviour and content detrimental to young audiences.

All in the name of entertainment

In their letter addressed to the Inspector of Police, Jubilee Hills, the complainants Kammari Srinivas, a resident of Gajwel and Bagannagari Ravinder Reddy from Rayapole, Siddipet district, stated that Bigg Boss has been ‘continuously telecasting objectionable and vulgar content under the name of entertainment.’

They alleged that participants on the show ‘use abusive language, exhibit indecent behaviour and indulge in acts that are morally and socially unacceptable.’

Negative impact on young minds

The complaint further stated, “Such programmes are having a severely negative impact on young minds, misleading them towards aggression, disrespect and immoral behaviour.”

What are such programmes trying to say?

The citizens expressed concern that the show encourages ‘arguments, personal attacks and unethical exposure purely for the sake of publicity.’ They also said that the programme ‘promotes vulgarity, indecent dialogues and behaviour which go against Indian family values and cultural ethics.’

They questioned the intent of the producers and broadcasters, saying, “It is important to ask what message they are trying to convey to today’s youth through such programmes and why participants with controversial backgrounds are being selected repeatedly.”

Call for suspension or ban

The complainants urged the police to take immediate legal action against the promoters, producers, and broadcasters of the show, seeking registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

They also appealed to the police to recommend to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting to ‘suspend or ban the ongoing season of Bigg Boss to prevent further harm to society.’

The letter concludes, “As responsible citizens, we believe that freedom of expression should not be misused to promote vulgarity and moral corruption. Such programmes not only disturb public decency but also weaken the moral foundation of our youth and society at large.”

History of controversies

The Bigg Boss reality show, hosted in multiple Indian languages, has frequently faced criticism over its content. While some view it as a social experiment reflecting real human interactions, others have accused it of normalising conflict and obscenity for the sake of ratings.

The present complaint adds to the ongoing debate over what constitutes acceptable television content and the responsibilities of broadcasters in maintaining public decency.

More details are awaited.
