The 71-year-old icon had been undergoing treatment after testing positive for Covid-19 and was on ventilator support.

A statement from the hospital conveyed the unfortunate news, stating, "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023."

The actor-politician had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for what was initially described as a regular health check-up. During that time, the party assured the public that Vijayakanth was in good health and would soon return home after the necessary tests.
