The film is skipping its theatrical release and is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video from 12 May. However, the film had landed in trouble with netizens demanding its ban. The reason behind the backlash is Farhan's stance on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The first-look of the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directorial took the Internet by storm and created an uproar on social media.
What happened during CAA protest?
Celebrities like Farhan Akhtar, Anubhav Sinha, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Swara Bhasker, lyricist Kausar Munir, late Sushanth Singh, and others had taken part in the protest in Mumbai on 19 December 2019.
"As a citizen of the country and as somebody who was born and has grown up with a certain idea of India, it is important for me to raise my voice. If everything was ok, why would so many people turn up? Not just in Mumbai, but Delhi, Assam, Bangalore, Hyderabad," Farhan Akhtar had said about the CAA issue.
Twitter demands Toofan's ban
Twitter uses have called for the boycott of the film and claimed the opinions of the actor is nationalistic. Netizens also said that they will not spare their time, money, and attention to the movie.
One Twitter user wrote, "No time for criminal sympathizers. We are ready to boycott. Waiting with bated breath to hit dislike on youtube and leave a sweet note on IMDB #farhanakhtar #toofan."
