His films 'Ramleela', 'Bajirao Mastani', and even Padmaavat had faced severe backlash from fans and people from different communities. Now, his upcoming film 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' has been accused of portraying Mumbai's Kamathipura area in a bad light.
The teaser of the film was unveiled recently on the director's birthday and it received a positive response from the audience. Alia Bhatt will play the titular role of Gangubai who ran a brothel in the Kamathipura area.
Meanwhile, Hotstar is planning to release a seven-episode series titled 'Kamathipura' directed by Shravankumar Tiwari. Set in Mumbai's red-light area, the film is about a woman police officer in search of a serial killer.
On Monday, an MLA in the Maharashtra Vidhanshaba session said the two projects have created a law-and-order situation in Nagpada, Mumbai. "Hotstar is going to telecast 'Kamathipura' which is a very bad serial. The additional police commissioner had put a stay on its telecast. I request you to stop it from being telecast," he said.
He also addressed his concerns about Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film. "People should know about the woman who has done good work. But this film, 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', showcases Kamathipura in a bad light. Kamathipura in the 50's was different from what it is today and girls from the area have gone ahead to become doctors, engineers, and pilots. I request you and the Home minister to change the film to show how things have changed in Kamathipura today," he said.
He said the movie had "Kathiawad" in the title and it was an attempt to showcase Kathiwad in a bad light. He requested the government to intervene and change the title.
