'It was for 140 crore people’: Indian cricketer Tilak Varma on Asia Cup Final heroics
Hyderabad: India’s young batter Tilak Varma emerged as the hero of the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan, playing a match-winning unbeaten 69 to help India secure a thrilling five-wicket victory.
Returning to Hyderabad on Monday, he was greeted with a warm reception at Shamshabad Airport and felicitated by Telangana Sports Authority officials.
Staying calm under pressure
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Varma (22) spoke about the mental focus that helped him navigate the tense chase.
“There was immense pressure and nerves, but I reminded myself that I was batting not just for me, but for 140 crore people. I had to stay calm, follow the basics and execute each ball carefully,” he said.

Turning the game around
India suffered early setbacks as top-order batters Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav were dismissed in the powerplay.
Varma’s composure and focus, coupled with a vital partnership with Shivam Dube, helped India recover and eventually win the title for the ninth time.
“After the first three wickets, the situation got tougher. Building partnerships was key to turning the game around,” he noted.
Handling the high-pressure India-Pakistan clash
Reflecting on the intense atmosphere of an India-Pakistan final, Varma said, “Pakistan tries to distract players, and a lot happens on the field. But the real answer is winning the game. That’s what I focused on, and that’s what mattered.”
Tribute to coaches and family
Varma credited his early coaches for shaping his career.
“Everyone knows my name now, but when I was unknown, Salam sir and Prithvi sir were always behind me. Practising at Legala Cricket Academy gave me the confidence to perform. I also thank my parents, the Hyderabad Cricket Association, and BCCI for supporting me,” he said.
A memorable innings
Calling his Asia Cup final knock one of the best of his career, Varma said, “Playing under pressure against Pakistan is an incredible feeling. I focused on one ball at a time and backed myself. Doing it for my country makes it even more special.”
Rising star of Indian cricket
Varma’s heroics not only helped India lift the Asia Cup but also highlighted his ability to stay calm under pressure, marking him as one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket.
