Hyderabad: Ever since the release of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s latest venture, Animal, the internet has been abuzz with the infectious rhythm and captivating entry scene of Bobby Deol adorned with the song ‘Jamaal Kudu’. This upbeat track, featured during the movie’s wedding sequence marking Bobby’s character, Abrar Haque’s grand entrance, has swiftly become a national favourite.

Surprisingly, the chart-topping song that has set the online sphere ablaze is not an indigenous composition but a reimagined version of an Iranian folk melody titled ‘Jamaal Jamaaloo,’ originating almost half a century ago.

Celebrated history

The song’s viral surge led netizens to investigate its origins, discovering it to be a traditional Bandar music piece from South Iran initially performed by a girls’ choir.

Penned by the Khatereh Group, the song’s translated lyrics convey heartfelt emotions, through the words, “Oh my cutie, don’t play with my heart; you are leaving, embarking on a journey; and I’m getting crazy. Oh my love, my beloved,” a heartfelt narrative stemming from a poem by Iranian poet Bijan Smandar.

Originally composed by the Shirazi Choir, a musical ensemble from Kharazemi Girls’ High School, the tune earned widespread acclaim in the 1950s, often gracing Iranian weddings and celebratory gatherings.

With an astounding 16 million views on YouTube in just two days after its release, the song has surged in popularity.

In a candid interview with Filmfare, Bobby Deol reminisced about the filming of the song, recalling Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s unique vision for the music. He shared, “Sandeep had found the music, a Persian song, and it was meant to be played during my introduction, a wedding sequence requiring dancing.”

This infectious melody from the movie Animal has transcended beyond a mere background score, transforming into a sensational anthem marking Bobby Deol’s grand entry. It’s become a harmonious fusion on social media, embraced by desi netizens who ingeniously incorporate it into memes and star entrances, earning its place as the year’s best background music.

Indeed, this musical marvel has left an undeniable mark, leaving audiences captivated by Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s directorial flair, while its origins, rooted in a rich Iranian folk heritage, add depth and allure to its captivating allure. The maestro behind the movie’s musical magic, Harshavardhan Rameshwar, known for his musical genius in both Hindi and Telugu cinema, has worked his magic once again in Animal.
