Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘little sister,’ Anuja follows the story of a gifted 9-year-old orphan working in a back-alley garment factory with her 17-year-old sister Palak. The plot explores the difficult decision Anuja faces, which could change the course of her future and her family’s well-being
The film marks Guneet Monga’s third Oscar nomination, following wins in the same category for The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence.
Hollywood star-writer Mindy Kaling, on board as producer, expressed gratitude to Netflix for showcasing the movie on their platform. “It is a dream come true to have Anuja on Netflix, where it can be seen by the worldwide audience it deserves.”
The short film competes against other notable films such as Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent.
