Hyderabad: Musical drama ‘Kewde Ka Bann’ to honour the late Dakhni poet Suleman Khateeb
Hyderabad: Musical drama ‘Kewde Ka Bann’ will be staged at Ravindra Bharathi on April 12 at 7:00 PM to honour the late Dakhni poet Suleman Khateeb. The event will be organised by the Suleman Khateeb Trust and Darpan Theatre.
During a press conference, organisers announced that the play aims to introduce the younger generation to the poet’s work and the broader culture of Dakhni literature.
Written by Naeem Javed and directed by Ali Ahmed, the production features music composed by Jaspal Singh Muni.
Who is Suleman Khateeb?
Suleman Khateeb (1922–1978) was a prominent figure in Dakhni poetry, known for addressing social issues such as the dowry system, family dynamics and the importance of education.
His work is recognised for its blend of satire, humour and social commentary. In 1974, he received the Karnataka Rajyotsava Youth Award, and his literature remains part of educational curricula in several Indian states.
What is the production about?
The production of ‘Kewde Ka Bann’, the title of one of Khateeb’s most popular poetry collections, will include songs based on his work, performed by singers from the film industry. Organisers stated that the play is designed to highlight the poet’s relevance in the modern era, noting that his work continues to reach large audiences through digital platforms.
The event is expected to attract visitors from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Organisers have invited the public, particularly students and the younger generation, to attend the performance to engage with Hyderabad’s literary traditions.
