The film features Samantha in the titular role of Shakuntala and Dev Mohan as Dushyanta, the king of the Puru dynasty, along with the supporting cast that includes Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Madhoo, Gautami, Aditi Balan, and Ananya Nagalla.
Story
Shakuntala, the daughter of Viswamitra and Menaka, is abandoned and found by Kanva Maharshi who later adopts her. Shakuntala grows into a beautiful woman and falls in love with King Dushyanta who visits the Ashram. They get married, get intimate and keep it a secret. Dushyanta leaves for his kingdom after that. Shakuntala reveals to her father that she’s pregnant and that she married the King. Will he come back to take his beloved wife with him? Will Shakuntala manage to get back to her husband? Will she manage to deliver the child in her husband’s presence?
Here’s what works in the film…
The movie is a treat for lovers of mythology, as the ancient tale is beautifully brought to life on the silver screen. The sets are stunning, with Gunashekar’s trademark attention to detail apparent in every frame.
Samantha’s portrayal of Shakuntala is exceptional and she truly brings the character to life. Dev Mohan’s performance as Dushyanta is also noteworthy, and the chemistry between the two leads is obvious.
One of the most exciting aspects of the film is the debut of Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha who plays the prominent role of Sarvadhamana also known as ‘Bharata’ after whom India was named.
While it remains to be seen if Arha will continue to pursue acting, her appearance is sure to be a talking point for fans of the actor.
‘Shaakuntalam’ is a well-executed retelling of a classic story, with some stunning visuals and solid performances from the cast. While it may not be perfect, it is certainly worth a watch for fans of mythology and epic tales.
…and what doesn’t
However, while the visuals of nature are breath-taking, the graphics leave something to be desired. The use of Macaw birds in mythology and lions/monkeys sitting on elephants feels a little out of place.
