Telugu film director B Gopal wins Satyajit Ray Award

Hyderabad: Telugu film director B. Gopal (Bejawada Gopal) has been chosen for the fourth Satyajit Ray Award for his contribution to Indian cinema.

In a career spanning over 40 years, B. Gopal has directed around 30 Telugu and two Hindi movies. His popular movies include Bobbili Raja, Lorry Driver, Assembly Rowdy, State Rowdy, Rowdy Inspector, Samarasimha Reddy, Narasimha Naidu, Indra, and Maska. The movie Samarasimha Reddy also won him the Filmfare Award for best director (Telugu).

The announcement coincides with the release date of his new movie Aaradugula Bullet, hitting theatres on 8 October after a wait of four years.

The award will be presented to the director on 13 October at a function in Hyderabad. This year's jury members included director Babu Kiriyath, music director Perumbavoor G. Raveendranath, director Sajin Lal, and others.

The previous recipients have been Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan, actress Madhabi Mukharjee, and director Mohan G. No one received the award in 2019 due to the pandemic.

The award, instituted by Satyajit Ray Film Society Kerala in 2016, includes a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a memento, and a plaque.
