Veteran singer Vani Jairam passes away at 78

Hyderabad: The Telugu film industry is mourning the back-to-back deaths of veteran artists. On 4 February, veteran singer Vani Jairam passed away at her residence in Chennai. The singer was to receive the Padma Bhushan—the third-highest civilian award in India—but she passed away before receiving the award. As per the latest reports, she had an injury on her forehead. She was 78 years old.
Vani Jairam worked with many big composers in the country and sang several songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tulu, and Oriya. She was honoured by the government with National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer thrice. She has also received state awards from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, and Odisha.
This singer got her break with the Hindi film ‘Guddi’ in 1971 in which she sang “Hum ko mann ki shakti dena,” one of most the popular songs in the country to date. She worked with many legendary composers, including M.S. Vishwanathan, K.V. Mahadevan, Chakravarthy, Ilaiyaraaja, and Sathyam, among others, spanning several film industries.
One of her other popular songs is “Anathineeyara Hara” from ‘Swathikiranam’ for which she won a National Award. Unfortunately, Viswanath, the director of the film, also passed away a night ago.
Vani Jairam’s breakthrough came with the release of the film Pooja’s soundtrack (1975) in which she sang “Ennenno Janmala Bandham.” She sang in numerous Telugu films directed by K. Viswanath, including ‘Seetamalakshmi,’ ‘Sruthilayalu,’ ‘Sankarabharanam,’ and ‘Swati Kiranam.’
Some of her most well-known hits in Telugu are “Minneti Sooridu Vachenamma,” “Saagara Sangamame,” “Alalu Kalalu” (Seethakoka Chiluka), “Vidhi Cheyu Vinthalanni” (Maro Charitra), “Nenaa Paadanaa Paata” (Guppedu Manasu), “Nuvvu Naa Pakkanunte” (Shivamttina Satyam), “Andela Ravamidhi,” “Kurisenu Virijallule” (Gharshana), “Theli Manchu Karigindi” (Swati Kiranam), among others.
The Telugu cinema industry and the entire country are mourning her demise.
