Facebook suspends Rambhakt Gopals account after Jamia firing

Hyderabad: Facebook on Thursday suspended the account of the 19-year-old who opened fire at protesters at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, injuring one student. The shooter has been identified as Rambhakt Gopal from the Jewar area of Gautam Buddha Nagar District in Uttar Pradesh.

In a statement, Facebook India said, "There is no place on Facebook for those who commit this kind of violence. We have removed the gunman's Facebook account and are removing any content that praises, supports or represents the gunman or the shooting as soon as we identify it."

Gopal opened fire at Jamia students who were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi on Thursday. He was arrested by the Delhi police after he injured an MA Mass Communication student, Shadaab, when a bullet hit his left hand. Gopal was heard shouting "Yeh lo Azaadi" and "Delhi Police zindabaad" while brandishing a pistol.

Gopal went live on Facebook when the students took out a march from the university to Rajghat. His Facebook posts read "ShaheenBagh.. Khel Khatam" ( ShaheenBagh.. game over ), "Koyi Hindu media nahi hai yaha" ( No Hindu media is here), "Chandan Bhai, ye badla aapke liye hai" (Chandan bhai, this revenge is for you) and "Meri Antim yatra par mujhe Bhagwa mein le jaaye, aur Jai Shri Ram ke naare ho" ( In my final journey, wrap me in saffron and shout slogans of Jai Shree Ram).

His photos on his Facebook page show him holding weapons and in his profile photo, he is seen standing next to Deepak Sharma, a controversial figure who, according to reports, has been involved in extremist activities in the past.
