An Instagram video claims belly fat can be reduced in three days without diet and exercise. It recommends drinking water boiled with garlic, ginger and lemon to achieve the feat.

The Instagram video advises boiling four cloves of garlic, a piece of raw ginger and half a piece of lemon for five minutes and drinking the strained water before breakfast to lose belly fat.


Fact Check

Newsmeter found that the claim was false. There is no scientific evidence to prove that the concoction can remove belly fat in a short time.

Though ginger, garlic and lemon possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, losing belly fat and weight subsequently without diet or exercise within three days is impossible, as per the experts.

Dr Shiva Raju, senior consultant and diabetologist at KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad said, “Weight loss is about calorie restriction and expenditure. Scientifically weight loss should be slow, around 3-4 kg for a month.”

“The ingredients mentioned in the drink have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But losing weight just by drinking the boiled water with ginger, lemon and garlic within three days is not possible," Dr Shiva Raju said.

“Nothing can reduce the weight of an individual in just three days. A healthy diet with protein and fibre-rich food is essential to lose fat,” Dr Kavya Dendukuri, consultant hepatologist and gastroenterologist at Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, said.

Is belly fat dangerous for health?

Belly fat contains subcutaneous and visceral fat which increases the risk of cardiac problems. Subcutaneous fat is stored just beneath the skin while visceral fat is found deep within the abdominal cavity.

Subcutaneous fat is considered non-dangerous, but the risks increase depending on the lifestyle of the individual. Those with a sedentary lifestyle, zero exercise, low muscle mass and consuming too many calories than required are prone to high levels of subcutaneous fat.

As per the Cleveland Clinic, exercising of at least 30 minutes per day, a healthy diet, intermittent fasting, good sleep, less stress and limited alcohol intake are necessary for reducing visceral fat.
