An Instagram video has gone viral claiming that consuming onion juice can reduce blood pressure. The video recommends consuming onion juice twice a day for 30 days, once on an empty stomach and three hours after taking lunch.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. Medical experts stated that consuming onion juice alone cannot reduce blood pressure.
Dr Srikrishna Raghavendra B, a consultant general physician at Kamineni Hospital, said, āResearch has shown that certain compounds in onions, particularly quercetin, can have hypotensive effects. Clinical trials have indicated positive outcomes on blood pressure levels in individuals. However, the effects of onion juice on blood pressure are not universally accepted, and more large-scale, controlled studies are needed to establish a definitive link.ā
Many traditional medicinal practices advocate for the use of natural foods like onions to manage health conditions, including hypertension. It is believed to provide the holistic benefits that natural foods bring to overall well-being.
Onions are rich in antioxidants, which help in reducing oxidative stressāa known contributing factor to high blood pressure.
āWhile there are some studies to support the claim the evidence is not conclusive. Therefore, managing hypertension typically requires a comprehensive approach, including a suitable diet, exercise and sometimes medication. Focusing solely on onion juice without addressing other factors may not provide significant results,ā Dr Srikrishna Raghavendra said.
There is also no specific standard on the amount of onion juice needed to achieve a measurable effect on blood pressure and maintaining this regimen might be difficult for many.
āWhile onion juice might be beneficial due to its quercetin content, it should not be viewed as a standalone treatment for hypertension. Combining it with a balanced diet, regular exercise and following medical advice is the best approach to managing blood pressure,ā Dr Srikrishna Raghavendra said.
