Fact Check: Kurnool SP did not issue any letter recently on Sugali Preethis death case

Hyderabad: Sugali Preethi, a 14-year-old girl studying Class X in Cattamanchali Ramalinga Reddy School, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, was raped in 2017, inside the school's hostel. The post-mortem report indicated semen in her genitals but the police closed the case by calling it a suicide.

Her body was found hanging to a ceiling fan while her feet were touching the ground. Though evidence from the crime scene and the final report indicated it to be a rape-murder, after a few months into the probe, police closed the case calling it a suicide rather than a rape.

On Sunday, a Twitter user posted an acknowledgement letter claiming to be a letter from Kurnool SP regarding Sugali Preethi's case.

The user tweeted "Finally, A Response From Kurnool SP On SugaliPreethi Case.Tq to all who participated in this Trend

జై హింద్. #JusticeForSugaliPreethi"

The tweet was retweeted over 400 times.

Archive for the claim can be found here.

Fact Check:

The claim is FALSE as the acknowledgement letter is fake.

A Twitter user retweeted which translates as "Brother this is a fake letter as the word acknowledgement is misspelt. This is being done in order to divert the trend".

#JusticeForSugaliPreethi is a trend going on recently to serve justice for the rape victim.

The misspelt word is acknowledgement, instead of acknowledgement.

When NewsMeter contacted the Kurnool police station, they rubbished off the claim as false and baseless.

Hence, the claim is FALSE.
