Hyderabad: India has recently faced multiple tragic train accidents, raising concerns about railway safety.
In June 2024, a goods train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express in West Bengal, resulting in at least nine deaths and numerous injuries. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has been criticised for inadequate safety measures despite significant investments in railway infrastructure.
In this context, a video of a running train halting suddenly and derailing on a station platform is making rounds on social media. Social media users have been sharing the video with the claim suggesting that the accident happened recently. (Archive)
An X user shared the video stating that while the government is being applauded for the budget, these train accidents are exposing its lies.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is false, as the video is of a train accident from 2015.
Upon conducting a reverse image search of the videoās keyframe, we found it published on NDTV on June 29, 2015, titled āWatch CCTV footage of Churchgate accident in which train crashed into platform.ā
According to the channel, an empty Churchgate-bound local train crashed into the platform after the motorman lost control of the vehicle and was unable to apply the brakes in time. This caused the overhead wire to snap as the train exceeded the track limit.
BCC News published the video on June 29, 2015, titled āIndia: Passengers leap from derailed train in Mumbai.ā The channel stated five passengers were injured and train services were disrupted.
Hindustan Times reported the accident in an article on June 28, 2015, titled āPanic at Mumbai's Churchgate station as train crashes into dead end.ā The newspaper also reported five passengers were injured and suburban train services were disrupted on the Western Railway line.
Hence, we conclude that the video does not show a recent accident. The claim is false.
