Hyderabad: On 24 February, Prashant Umrao, the spokesperson of Uttar Pradesh BJP, tweeted a video of Congress leader Kamal Nath and claimed to expose the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

In the video, Mr. Nath can be heard saying ā€œIf we donā€™t get 90% of the Muslim communityā€™s votes, it will be a great loss for us.ā€ Mr. Umrao claimed that the statement was made after Mr. Nath visited Bageshwar Dham. (Archive)

The claim comes after Mr. Nath visited Bageshwar Dham in the Chhatarpur district on 13 February and met the controversial self-styled godman Dhirendra Shastri.

Fact Check

NewMeter found that the statement was made ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.

We ran a keyword search and found the same video published by several news outlets in 2018. ABP News published an extended version of the video on 22 November 2018 titled ā€œKamal Nathā€™s Video Seeking ā€˜Muslim Votesā€™ Creates Controversy.ā€

ā€œWe need to find out why only 50-60 per cent of Muslims voted for us in the last election. If we donā€™t get 90% of the Muslim communityā€™s votes, it will be a great loss for us,ā€ Mr. Nath can be heard saying.

NDTV published the same video on 21 November 2018, titled ā€œControversy Over Kamal Nathā€™s Video On Muslim Votes.ā€ It said the video was in circulation weeks before the Madhya Pradesh election.

It is evident that the viral video dates back to 2018. We conclude that the former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath did not make the statement seeking 90% Muslim votes after visiting Dhirendra Shastri in Bageshwar Dham. Hence, the claim is misleading.
