Hyderabad: A video of Australian cricket players drinking a canned alcoholic beverage using their shoes as the container is going viral on social media.
A Facebook user shared the video, claiming that it shows the Australian cricket team celebrating after defeating India in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. āAustralian team celebration after winning world cup 2023, (sic)ā read the postās caption.
NewsMeter found that the video shows the Australian cricket team celebrating after winning the T20 World Cup 2021, not recently concluded ODI ICC World Cup 2023.
We ran a relevant keyword search and came across a 2021 report by The Indian Express titled āThe Australian way: Cricketers drink from shoe after winning T20 World Cup.ā The report carried the screengrabs from the video.
As per the news outlet, the video shows wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis pouring beer into their shoes and drinking out of them ā referred to as ādoing a shoeyā in Australia ā after their maiden T20 World Cup victory with an eight-wicket triumph over New Zealand in the final in 2021.
We also found the viral video on X, posted by the official handle of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on November 15, 2021.

Hence, we conclude that the viral video of Aussie cricketers drinking beer from a shoe is from 2021. The claim that it shows Aussie celebration after clinching the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is false.
