Hyderabad: Several social media users have shared a video of a family drowning at sea, linking it to the recent cyclone Biparjoy. The video shows massive waves sweeping a family into the ocean in a matter of seconds.
The incident turned a happy family outing at the beach into a tragedy of a lifetime. But is this a recent incident related to cyclone Biparjoy? Let’s find out.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found the claim to be false.
On performing a simple reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of India Today dated July 14, 2022, which makes the incident a year old and unrelated to the recent cyclone.
The video is titled, “WATCH: Indian Family Swept Away By Violent Waves On Oman's Mughsail Beach,” which indicates that the video is not from India.
Taking this as a cue, we performed a keyword search and found the same report on multiple media websites like Tribune India, The Indian Express and Gulf News.
According to the report in the Tribune India, “In a tragic incident, three members of a family from Maharashtra’s Sangli were swept away off the coast of Salah al-Mughsail in Oman. The father who was washed away with his two children is reported to have died.”
Through our search, we also found a tweet with the same video uploaded on the official Twitter handle of Al Arabiya English dated 12 July 2022 having the same report as the aforementioned sources.
The tweet reads, “Watch: A family is swept away by a giant wave on #Oman’s Mughsail beach after eight members reportedly crossed the beach’s boundary fence.” This was followed by a report on the aftermath.
Hence, NewsMeter has confirmed that the viral video of a tragedy at Oman’s Mughsail beach is being shared as a video related to Cyclone Biparjoy.
