Fact Check: AI-generated image falsely shows Atlético de Madrid fans waving Palestine flag in stadium

Hyderabad: Amid the raging conflict between Israel and Hamas, an image showing Atlético de Madrid club fans waving a giant Palestinian flag in a stadium is going viral on social media with the claim that the football club fans are supporting Palestine.
An X premium account, Sprinter, shared the image with the caption, “Atletico Madrid fans support Palestine.”

Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the image has been created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Upon a reverse image search, we found the image was first posted on X on October 18 by the account Atletico Universe with the Palestine flag in the caption. The community note added to the post said that the image is AI-generated. Taking this cue, we observed the image minutely and found several anomalies, such as missing hands and fingers, a common error found in AI-generated images.

Further, we ran the image through the AI-detector website Hugging Face, which analysed the image as AI-generated with 85 per cent.

We also checked the official account of the Atlético de Madrid but did not find any image resembling the viral image.
Hence, we conclude that the viral image is AI-generated. Any claim of Atlético de Madrid supporting Palestine amid the Israel-Hamas conflict is false.
