News media organizations on August 5, reported that the authorities suspended Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir in view of 4th anniversary of abrogation of Article 370. A verified twitter handle Counter Disinformation Centre termed the news fake claiming that the Yatra was continued.

ā€œThis news is fake. The Yatra will continue as per the schedule and without any change (J&K Government)ā€ the tweet reads carrying the screenshot of the news posts.




Fact Check

NewsMeter began its investigation whether the yatra was stopped on August 5, in view of the 4th anniversary of abrogation of Article 370, by a keyword search on the suspension of the Yatra. We came across several links claiming that the yatra was suspended for the day on August 5.

A Hindustan times report claimed that the yatra was suspended for the day on August 5. ā€œA top official told HT that the decision has been taken in view of the fourth anniversary of the revocation of Article 370 and 35-Aā€, report clarified.

Another report by India TV also claimed that the Yatra was suspended in view of the 4th anniversary of abrogation of article 370 on August 5.

ā€œThe Amarnath Yatra remained suspended from the Jammu base camp today (August 5) amid heightened security on the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370ā€, the report clarified.

The Centre revoked Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two Union territories- J-K and Ladakh- on August 5, 2019.
