Hyderabad: On December 2, several Telugu media outlets reported that the Director of Medical Education (DME) in Andhra Pradesh announced a new dress code for medical students and faculty.
The reports claim medical students and faculty have been barred from wearing Jeans and T-shirts. The new dress code entails that female students should only wear sarees and churidars, and their hair should not be loose. The male students must be clean-shaven and neatly dressed.
The claim has been made by Surya News, Abp Live Telugu, News18 Telugu, Asianet News Telugu, NTV, Latestly Telugu, and ap7am.com. (Click here, here, here, here, here, here and here to see the archive of the articles.)
NewsMeter ran a keyword search and found that the Andhra Pradesh Medical Education Services has not issued any such guidelines about the dress code for medical students.
Andhra Pradesh government's Fact Check Twitter handle clarified that no such orders have been issued for medical students. The official handle calling out the media outlets tweeted, "The AP Medical Education Services refutes, "the news published in certain media sections regarding dress code in medical colleges." No such orders have been issued for Medical Students. The news spreading is not official."
The handle also tweeted a letter from the Director of Medical Education, Vinod Kumar. The letter said that the news about the new dress code was not official.
It called out Surya News and TV9 News for publishing fake news and stated that "no such circulars or orders have been issued for medical students."
The letter further added that a code is being worked out for employees and faculty in consultation with various employee associations and institutions. The detailed circular will be issued after consultation and deliberation.
Since the claim about new dress code for medical students in Andhra Pradesh has been officially denied. Hence, we conclude that the claim by the media outlets is false.
