HYDERABAD: Last week, the price of domestic cooking gas cylinders was increased by Rs.50 in Tamil Nadu. An LPG refill now costs Rs.1050 in the state.
A post claiming that Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K Annamalai has said: "gas cylinder prices will not be hiked again" in the state began circulating on Whatsapp. The post carries the logo of the media outlet 'Junior Vikatan' and claims that this would be the last gas hike.
"This is the last gas price hike. This is the last gas price hike. Beat us with our sandals if we raise them too high. - Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai," the post reads.
FACT CHECK:
Firstly, it should be noted that any change (reduction or hike) in gas cylinder prices cannot be decided by Annamalai.
Several factors play a role in deciding its cost. Recently, oil companies have been changing the rates of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas cylinders as per the international crude oil prices. Based on this, fuel prices in the state, as well as the country, have been increasing for the past few months.
Secondly, if Annamalai had made such an announcement, it would have been reported by media organizations, but no such report can be found. This indicates a high chance of this announcement not being made.
Thirdly, the font style used in the viral post is different from the font style used in posts published by Junior Vikatan. This clearly shows that the viral post is fake and not published by a credible source. The image has been edited to pass on false news.
Therefore, it is evident that Annamalai has not announced that gas cylinder prices will not be hiked again.
