Hyderabad: A blurred screenshot that shows a notification of December 22, 2022, by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is doing the rounds on social media.

Social media users claim that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has lifted the ban on 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found no such notification was issued and the claim is false.

We checked for the notification on the website of the Press Information Bureau and found a notification, dated 22 December 2022. It was regarding the trading of cars and rules for registration, which will come into effect from 1 April 2023. We did not find any mention of old vehicles or ban reversal in the notification.

On 13 February, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) on Twitter called the viral claim circulating on social media “fake news”.

In a series of tweets, the ministry clarified that the ban imposed on 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles by “NGT, and upheld by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, is still in force.”

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) has clarified that no notification has been issued to lift the ban on old vehicles. Hence, we conclude that the claim is false.
