Bengal govt will not promote class 10, 12 students without exams; viral video is old

Hyderabad: As Covid-19 cases surge in China and a few other countries, misinformation regarding the virus is rampant on social media. Now, according to one video (a news clip of ABP News), the West Bengal government has decided to promote students of classes 10 and 12 without examination in view of the pandemic.

Fact Check

NewsMeter ran a keyword search to find credible reports about any recent announcement by the government but could not find any reports on the same.

Taking ABP News as a cue, we found that the original video was uploaded on 11 November 2020 by the news channel on its YouTube channel. It is titled "WB Govt Decides To Promote Class 10 & 12th Students Without Exams."

In West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee-led government had decided to promote the students of classes 10 and 12 without conducting examinations. The decision was taken keeping in mind the situation in the state due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was considered crucial ahead of the elections in the state.

Further, we checked the official website of the ministry of education to find if any such announcement had been made but we found that NO such announcement has been made.

From this, it is evident that an old video about the West Bengal government promoting students of classes 10 and 12 without examination has resurfaced again with misleading claims. Hence, the post is misleading.
