HYDERABAD: Social media users are claiming that BJP councilor Uma Anandan has announced that a statue of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, would be installed in West Mambalam.
"This is my first job. In West Mambalam, a statue of the patriot Godse will be installed," the post quoting her said.
This statement became viral after Uma Anandan supported the assassin of Mahatma.
FACT CHECK:
NewsMeter checked online for news reports that could support the claim but found no results. Had Uma made such a statement, the media would have reported it. Since no reports have been published, it is highly unlikely that Uma has made such a statement.
Uma Anandan – the only BJP candidate to win one of the 200 councilor seats in the Greater Chennai Corporation, created controversy during her campaign by praising Nathuram Godse.
The News Minute quoted the interview of Uma in which she supported Godse. When an interviewer asked, "Are you saying that the majority of those who pick up knives and guns are Christians and Muslims?" to which she replied, "Yes."
When the interviewer asked about Godse shooting Gandhi, she asked, "But why did he shoot him?" After a while in the same clip, she said, "He had his justification and I have no regrets, I am a supporter of Godse."
However, here too, Uma did not announce that a statue of Godse would be installed in West Mambalam.
Moreover, the media organization 'Kadir', whose logo has been added to the viral post has denied the claim. It states that the post is fake.
Clearly, Uma Anandan did not announce Godse's statue would be installed in West Mambalam.
Thus, the claim is false.
