Hyderabad: A social media post claims that blowing balloons every day can cure severe illnesses. The viral post claims that “Blowing a balloon every day for 10 minutes would cure mouth cancer, lung cancer, heart attack, blockage and asthma.”
Is this legitimate? Let’s find out.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found the claim to be false. We contacted Dr Tripti Deb, senior consultant cardiologist at Apollo Clinics, who helped debunk the claim. She said, “There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that blowing balloons for 10 minutes every day cannot cure mouth cancer, lung cancer, heart attack, blockage, or asthma. In fact, blowing balloons can actually be harmful to your lungs. The act of blowing a balloon can increase your risk of developing asthma or other respiratory problems.”
She added, “Mouth cancer, lung cancer, heart attack, blockage, and asthma are all serious diseases that require medical attention. If you are experiencing any symptoms of these diseases, please see a doctor right away. There is no need to waste time with unscientific treatments.”
The claim that blowing balloons can cure these diseases is likely based on the fact that blowing balloons can help to strengthen your lung muscles. However, strengthening your lung muscles is not the same as curing a disease. In order to cure a disease, you need to treat the underlying cause of the disease.
If you are looking for ways to improve your lung health, there are many other things to do besides blowing balloons. These include:
- quitting smoking
- eating a healthy diet
- exercising regularly
- getting enough sleep
- managing stress
If you are concerned about your lung health, please talk to your doctor. They can help you develop a personalised plan to improve your lung health.
