An Instagram post claiming that consuming rice at night may lead to the weakening of bones has gone viral on social media.

The post reads: "Don't eat rice daily at night. It can weaken bones because it does not provide essential nutrients to the body. It can also make you fatter," read the post.

A healthy balanced diet will help you build healthy bones from an early age and maintain them throughout your life. A good diet is only one of the building blocks for healthy bones, which also includes exercise and avoiding certain risk factors for osteoporosis.

NewsMeter found no evidence to back the viral claim.

We started our investigation by performing a keyword search on Google and found an article by Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation titled 'Foods and your bones'.

The entire article talks about food that affects the bones and healthy eating habits that are important for overall bone health.

The article consists of a list of products that may cause bone loss such as alcohol, coffee or tea, soft drinks, and salty foods.

We could not find any mention of rice being a cause of bone loss.

`Everyday health' lays out a long list of 9 food products that are harmful to bone health.

The list doesn't include rice consumption to be harmful to bones anywhere.

Moreover, according to research by NHS, rice could be a good source of calcium for Vegas as non we can get most of the calcium from dairy products.

NewsMeter reached out to Dr. Anurag Sharma to know more about the link between rice consumption and bone health.

Dr. Sharma said, 'Per 100gm of rice has 7gms of protein, Vitamin B, Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and 354 kCalories.

There is no supportive evidence that rice weakens bones. Calcium, magnesium & phosphorus play a major role in bone strength, which are present in the rice. It is a staple diet of people in many states but there is no such decrease in bone strength in such areas. Also, rice provides a sufficient amount of calories and dietary fiber.

Rather it helps in maintaining bone strength by providing essential nutrients.'

There is no evidence that rice has any direct impact on the weakening of bones.

A well-balanced diet is key for healthy bones.

The claim stands false.
