Fact Check

NewsMeter found the claim to be false.

Can turmeric completely detox the liver?

According to Healthline, turmeric has been shown to decrease the key pro-inflammatory molecules that contribute to the initiation, development, or worsening of diseases. It may help reduce your risk of liver disease. Due to turmericā€™s low bioavailability, itā€™s best taken in supplement form, standardized for 95 percent curcuminoids. Research on these supplements and others is ongoing, so talk to your doctor about the potential risks and benefits they may offer you before use.

Is it necessary to do a liver detoxification?

Not at all. Healthline says, ā€œThe reality is that toxins are everywhere in our environment, and our bodies have the built-in capacity to defend against these toxins naturally. Of course, there are things you can do to improve your health and support healthy liver function.ā€

Although, turmeric extract has been shown to protect against liver injury. However, there have not been adequate clinical trial data in humans to recommend the routine use of these natural compounds for prevention, says Hopkins Medicine.

It further adds, ā€˜As for overindulgence of alcohol or food, less is always best when it comes to liver health and cleanses have not been proven to rid your body of damage from excess consumption.ā€™

Is it safe to take a turmeric concoction every day?

Yes, research has shown that curcumin doses of 4,000ā€“8,000 mg per day or even as high as 12,000 mg per day are safe.

According to Medical News Today, turmeric tea may have numerous benefits, but research on the impact of turmeric on different areas of health is still ongoing. There is no guarantee that turmeric can help with, let alone cure, any health issue.

It should be noted that more research is needed to conclude the benefits of turmeric tea or supplements.

Notably, there are certain limitations and side effects when overconsumed.

ā€œā€˜Turmeric usually doesn't cause serious side effects. Some people can experience mild side effects such as stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea. These side effects are more common at higher doses,ā€ WebMD says.

Remember, moderation is the key.
