Candlelight march from Seoul passed off as AAPs roadshow in Rajkot

Social Media users are sharing an aerial image claiming that it shows locals participating in large numbers in the Aam Aadmi Party's roadshow in Rajkot, Gujarat.

The claim comes after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on November 6 held a roadshow in the Rajkot east constituency in the run-up to the assembly election scheduled next month.

A parody Twitter account shared the image and the English translation of its caption read: "In Rajkot, locals participated in large numbers in the AAP's roadshow."

Fact Check

NewsMeter came across a tweet by the official handle of the BJP Gujarat alleging that AAP leaders are sharing a Koreas' candlelight vigil image as their roadshow. The handle also shared a screenshot of Delhi's deputy CM Manish Sisodia retweeting the viral image.

Taking this as a cue, we performed a reverse image search using keywords and found the image carried in an article published on 5 November by The Korea Times. It said that candlelight vigils and rallies were organized in South Korea on 5 November to mourn the death of 156 people killed in the Halloween crowd crush near City Hall in Central Seoul.

BBC also carried the same image in a 5 November article. It said as public anger continues to build over the biggest tragedy in South Korea, thousands gathered across Seoul with white candles and black signs to mourn the young victims of the Itaewon crush and demand justice from the government.

It is evident that the image is of a candlelight vigil from South Korea taken out on 5 November to mourn the deaths of people killed in a crowd crush during Halloween festivities. Hence, the claim is false.
