HYDERABAD: A video of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers being attacked is circulating on social media.

Users claim that Dalits attacked the party workers in Uttar Pradesh amid assembly polls.

Whatsapp users are sharing the video with the text, "BJP attacked in village Salwa of Sardhana Vidhan Sabha of Meerut. They were beaten up for protesting by the members of the Dalit community."

The same video is also viral on Twitter and Facebook.

FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter noticed that a poster in the video reads, "Jangaon Traffic Police." Jangaon is a district in Telangana. People chasing the BJP workers wore pink shawls, a color used by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)ā€” the state's ruling party. The writings on billboards were in Telugu. One of the billboards carried the picture and name of K Chandrasekhar Rao, the state's CM. This confirmed that the video was shot in Telangana and not Uttar Pradesh.

NewsMeter then searched for reports on a BJP attack in Jangaon and found that this incident took place on February 9, 2022, when workers of TRS and BJP clashed at a protest.

An anti-Modi protest was held on February 9 by the TRS workers to denounce his statements on Telangana state formation. The PM's remarks weren't appreciated by the TRS members. On February 9, Jangaon MLA Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy called upon a protest against the PM. Several ministers, MLAs, MPs, and party leaders participated in the protests and organized bike rallies in various districts and burnt effigies of BJP. Protestors clashed with BJP party workers.

According to The Hindu, The TRS' decision to burn an effigy of Modi was objected to by BJP supporters who arrived at the spot. A report by the Times of India carried the same video. "BJP, TRS workers clash violently during an anti-Modi protest in Telangana," the TOI said.

The viral video was also uploaded by TV9 Telugu with the title, "TRS-BJP beaten in the crowd."

Clearly, a clash between TRS and BJP in Telangana's Jangaon district on February 9, 2022, is being falsely shared as Dalits attacking BJP workers in Uttar Pradesh amid assembly polls.
