Hyderabad: A video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah purportedly asking people not to vote for BJP candidate Manoj Nirbhay Singh in Madhya Pradesh’s Depalpur is going viral on social media.
A Facebook user shared the video with the caption, “Now even the Home Minister of the country is asking people not to vote for the BJP candidate from Depalpur… again Vishal Patel.” (Translated from Hindi)
NewsMeter found that the video was clipped to mislead the people by deleting the full context.
We ran a keyword search and came across a video of a public rally addressed by Amit Shah live streamed on his YouTube channel on November 11, titled ‘HM Amit Shah addresses the public rally in Depalpur, Madhya Pradesh.’
At the 7:40 minute timestamp, the viral clip appears where he says, “Brothers and sisters, when you go to vote on the 17th, remember one thing; do not vote for Manoj Nirbhay Singh to make him MLA.”
However, his statement after this timeframe has been clipped out. He further says at the 8-minute timestamp, “He will become an MLA with your vote, but it should be towards the development and security of Madhya Pradesh. Your one vote will make the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh — the double-engine government of Modiji.”
It is clear from the above excerpt from the extended version of the viral clip that Amit Shah meant that the Depalpur’s public vote would not only make Manoj Nirbhay Singh MLA but would bring the BJP government to Madhya Pradesh.
We also found Shah’s speech was live-streamed on the official Facebook page of BJP on November 11. The video also does not show Amit Shah asking people not to vote for the BJP candidate in Depalpur.
Hence, we conclude that the viral video is clipped and does not show the full context.
