The video clip of the anchor is being shared with a false narrative that the anchor is apologizing to the nation on air for being a woman. The onscreen caption in Hindi reads, “जब जागो तभी सवेरा”.

Is Liyaquat really apologizing in the clip for being a woman?

Let’s find out.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the claim is false as the viral video is a clipped version of a news broadcast, and her statement in the edited version is being deliberately misinterpreted.

Upon performing a reverse image search, we found the original extended version of the viral clip on the official YouTube channel of ABP News, published on November 30, 2019.

The title of the video reads, “Furious Over Hyderabad Gang Rape Case, Anchor Rubika Liyaquat Burst Out In Tears | ABP News.” In this original video, the viral clip is seen at 1:12 minutes.

The caption of the YouTube video reads, “Furious over Hyderabad gang rape case, ABP News anchor Rubika Liyaquat burst out in tears.”

On analyzing the full version of the video, we found that Rubika Liyaquat is not apologizing for being a woman. Rather she burst into tears while talking about the Hyderabad gang rape case that happened three years ago near Outer Ring Road at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The full video of ABP News was shared by some Facebook users as well, with the complete context behind the anchor’s outburst.

Moreover, the same video was discussed by a media organisation News Laundry, on its Facebook page, criticising the over-dramatic reporting tactics used by the mainstream media and anchors.

The caption to her video reads, “News Channels like Aaj Tak, Republic and ABP News decided to use the Hyderabad rape case to get TRPs for themselves. As usual. While Rubika Liyaquat over- dramatically burst into tears, Arnab decided to do some Whatsapp-based drama.”

The News Laundry commentary is also found on their YouTube Channel.

Hence, it is evident that the viral clip does not show the anchor crying and apologizing for being a woman.
