Hyderabad: Videos of various newly elected MPs taking oath in the Parliament in the 18th Lok Sabha have gone viral.
Among them is a video of Yusuf Pathan, a former cricketer and now an MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) representing the Baharampur constituency in West Bengal. In the video that has gone viral, Pathan could be seen saying ‘Jai Gujarat’ during his oath-taking ceremony on June 25, sparking controversy.
An X user shared the video with the caption, “Yusuf Pathan who got elected by the votes of Bengali gave the slogan of JAI GUJARAT after oath taking. Imagine any BJP MP from Bengal doing this ! Cheap Minister would have tagged him/her as Outsider. TMC logic: if you support BJP, you’re outsider; if you oppose BJP, you’re our own. (sic)” The video, only a second long, shows Pathan saying ‘Jai Gujarat.’ It was retweeted by more than 400 users.
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading as the video is clipped.
A reverse image search led to the original clip posted by The Print with the title ‘Former cricketer and TMC MP Yusuf Pathan takes oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha.’ The original video, lasting 53 seconds, shows Pathan concluding his oath with ‘Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, and Jai Gujarat,’ not just ‘Jai Gujarat.’
Another news site, ABP also posted the video of the former cricketer taking oath. As per the report, the oath taken by MP Yusuf Pathan in Hindi translates to, “I, Pathan Yusuf Khan, having been elected a member of the House of People do swear in the name of God affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established, that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Jai Gujarat.”
Hence the claim that Yusuf Pathan only said ‘Jai Gujarat’ after taking his oath is misleading. The video circulating on social media is clipped.
