Congress edits TMC poster for UP election campaign

HYDERABAD: An image of two men holding a poster in support of Congress is viral on social media. The men are dressed in different religious attires and claim to show united support to Congress in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming elections. The poster carries the logo of the party, which reads, "Congress will soon be in UP."

Verified Twitter account of UP Youth Congress shared the image claiming that "only Congress is in the heart of UP" and that this government is going to be formed in the state. "Congress is coming to Uttar Pradesh!" reads a part of the tweet. (archive)



Many other Twitter users shared the image with the same claim.


FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found that the viral image is edited. In the original picture, both the men were holding a poster that carried the image of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her party- Trinamool Congress.

Many social media users shared the original picture in March 2021 ahead of the West Bengal elections held last year. Verified Facebook page "Didi Ke Bolo" shared the image on 2 March 2021. The campaign was held in support of Mamata Banerjee.


Trinamool Congress leader and MP Nusrat Jahan also tweeted the original picture on 2 March 2021.
