Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video dates back to at least 2022. We also did not find any credible report that the hijab ban in Karnataka has been lifted.

On performing a reverse image of the video’s keyframe, we found it was posted by several social media users in February 2022. (Click here and here to see the posts.)

In February 2022, the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government of Karnataka ordered a ban on clothes which disturb equality, integrity, and public order in schools and colleges. The ban was upheld by the Karnataka High Court. Muslim students approached the Supreme Court and refused to attend classes until the final verdict. (Read India Today report here.)

On 13 October 2022, the apex court delivered a split verdict and referred the matter to a larger bench.

On 24 May 2023, G. Parameshwara, minister in the newly-formed Congress government, said regarding the revocation of the hijab ban that the government “will see to it in the future.”

Hence, we conclude that the claim that the Congress government has lifted the hijab ban in schools and colleges is false.
