Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the original photo shows Mr. Modi reading a book titled “Getting India Back on Track: An Action Agenda for Reform.”

On performing a reverse image search, we found the original image in a 2014 article published on the website of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. It said two weeks after becoming India’s Prime Minster, Mr. Modi launched the book “Getting India Back on Track: An Action Agenda for Reform” at the 7 Race Course road.

We also found the original photo in a 2014 article in The Wire titled “Carnegie Endowment in India: Promoting US Leadership With Indian Corporate Wealth.” It said the book was published by Carnegie Endowment.

The book, according to its blurb, “broadly coincides with the 2014 Indian elections to spur a public debate about the program that the next government should pursue in order to return the country to a path of high growth.”

Here is the comparison of the original and the morphed images.

Hence, we conclude that the viral image is morphed and misleading.
