Hyderabad: A photo of the late Indira Gandhi standing with Sonia Gandhi and a young Rahul Gandhi in the latterās arms is doing the rounds on social media. Those sharing the photo claim that the photo shows the former Prime Minister wearing a burkha and a hijab.
Several Facebook users shared the photo calling Indira Gandhi āIndira Khanā and Rahul Gandhi āRahul Khan.ā
Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the viral photo has been morphed to mislead the people.
On performing a reverse image search of the photo, we found an uncropped version published by The Times of India. The original photo shows Indira Gandhi with a jacket over the saree with sareeās pallu on her head.
The photo is credited to BCCL (Bennett, Coleman and Company Limited), the parent company of the Times of India group.
Taking a cue from this, we searched for the photo in the archives of The Times of India and found the same original version, with the caption, āPrime Minister Indira Gandhi along with her grandson little Rahul, in the arms of his mother Sonia, poses for a photograph at her residence in New Delhi on May 09, 1971.ā
Here is the comparison between the uncropped original and the cropped version.
Hence, we conclude that the claim that the photo shows former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a burkha and hijab is false.
