Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the viral photo has been morphed to mislead the people.

On performing a reverse image search of the photo, we found an uncropped version published by The Times of India. The original photo shows Indira Gandhi with a jacket over the saree with sareeā€™s pallu on her head.

The photo is credited to BCCL (Bennett, Coleman and Company Limited), the parent company of the Times of India group.

Taking a cue from this, we searched for the photo in the archives of The Times of India and found the same original version, with the caption, ā€œPrime Minister Indira Gandhi along with her grandson little Rahul, in the arms of his mother Sonia, poses for a photograph at her residence in New Delhi on May 09, 1971.ā€

Here is the comparison between the uncropped original and the cropped version.

Hence, we conclude that the claim that the photo shows former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a burkha and hijab is false.
