Delhi murder: Is Aftab Poonawala a Muslim or a Parsi?

Twitter has been flooded with posts claiming Shraddha's murderer Aftab Amin Poonawalla is a Parsi and not Muslim.

The viral tweet says, "Aftab Ponamwala is the name of the guy. He was a Parsi. Not that it matters but ppl will again paint it as a Hindu-Muslim conflict."

It was an inhumane act against an innocent girl, the user added.

On 12^th Nov 22, Aftab Amin Poonawalla was arrested by Delhi police for committing a heinous murder of his 26-year-old partner, Shraddha Walkar. He chopped the victim's body into 35 pieces.

NewsMeter scanned Aftab's social media account and found his Instagram account with the username @thehungrychokro.

On carefully analysing his instagram account, we found a post from 2014 in which Aftab acknowledged that he is a Muslim.

Replying to a comment on asking about his faith and religion, Aftab Amin Poonawala wrote, "I am a Muslim and the other term you're is Hindu. Lord Krishna is the God of Hindus. May I ask why the certain inquisitiveness about my religion???"

For further confirmation, we found a copy of the FIR on the twitter handle of @Abhijit Majumdar, Journalist. Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of earshot.in in which it is clearly mentioned that Aftab Amin Poonawala is a Muslim.

The following statement of victim Sharadha's father is enough put an end to this social media fuss. The FIR reads: "My daughter told my wife in 2019 that she wants to stay in a live-in relationship with Aftab Amin Poonawalla. I and my wife had said 'No' to it. This is because we are Hindus and belong to the Koli caste. And the boy is a Muslim,"

Hence, it is evident that Aftab Amin Poonawala is a Muslim and not a Parsi.
