Hyderabad: An image of Dubai's Burj Khalifa lit up with the Sri Lankan flag is circulating on social media with misleading claims.
On 11 September, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs in the Asia Cup 2022 final at the Sharjah stadium.
Following this, an image of Burj Khalifa lit up with Sri Lanka's national flag is doing the rounds on social media.
Fact Check
NewsMeter performed a reverse image search and found the photo in an article published by the international media organisation Dajiworld. The report was titled "Dubai: Burj Khalifa lights up with Sri Lanka's colors in solidarity" and was dated 25 April 2019. It read, "In solidarity with the victims of the serial bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, world-renowned skyscraper Burj Khalifa on Thursday April 25 lit up with the colours of Sri Lanka's flag. Sharing the image of the skyscraper all lit up, the Burj Khalifa's official Twitter handle conveyed a message of tolerance and co-existence."
Taking this as a clue, we ran a keyword search on YouTube and found a video of the Burj Khalifa lit up the Sri Lankan flag on the official channel of Ada Derana from 26 April 2019. The English translation of the Sri Lankan title read "The highest place in the world joins in paying respect to the deceased Sri Lankans."
Burj Khalifa's official Twitter account had posted the same photo in April 2019.
Lastly, we ran a keyword search to find whether Burj Khalifa was lit up with the Sri Lankan national flag on 11 September 2022 after the country's Asia Cup victory but we did not find any information. However, we confirmed that on 11 September, the Burj Khalifa paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II following her death.
Burj Khalifa is one of the most famous and tallest skyscrapers in the world. Any event or celebration there becomes international news.
It is evident that Burj Khalifa did not light up with the Sri Lankan flag to celebrate the country's Asia Cup 2022 victory. Hence, the claim is false.
