A video showing a puppet dancing to the tune of the Oscar-winning song “Naatu Naatu” from SS Rajamouli’s film ‘RRR’ has gone viral on social media.

Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra group, shared the video and wrote, “Ok. One last tweet, I promise, about #NaatuNaatu But couldn’t resist this one. Real evidence of it being a global phenomenon since it now has the whole world on its ‘strings’.” (Archive)

Several Twitter and Facebook users shared the video with the same claim.

Fact Check

NewMeter found that the viral clip has been doctored. The original video is six years old and features the popular Spanish number “Despacito.”

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found the original video published on YouTube on 21 August 2017. It is titled “Despacito Dancing Puppet!!”

Taking a cue from this, we ran a keyword search and found articles from 2017 published on BuzzFeed and Vulture. Both articles carried the viral video and said the puppet dance was recorded to the tune of “Despacito.”

It is evident that the original video is at least six years old and features a puppet dancing to “Despacito” and not “Naatu Naatu.” Hence, we conclude that the viral video featuring “Naatu Naatu” as the background music is misleading.
