Doctored video shows PM Modi mocking people who suffered due to demonetisation

Hyderabad: Six years ago, on 8 November 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a televised address to the nation, announced the demonetisation of all Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 banknotes to combat the accumulation and circulation of black money. Following the announcement, there was an extreme cash crunch across the country, with people lining up at banks and ATMs for weeks.

On the sixth anniversary of demonetisation, social media users shared a video of PM Modi and alleged that he was mocking people who suffered because of demonetisation. In the video, Mr. Modi can be heard speaking about demonetisation and about people not having money during weddings at home.

A Twitter user shared the video and accused the PM of taking sadistic pleasure in people not having money for their daughter's wedding. (Archive)

Fact Check

NewsMetre noticed the logo of ABP News and the ticker that read "PM Narendra Modi is live from Japan." Taking these as a cue, we searched using relevant keywords and found that PM Modi, in 2016, had visited Japan to attend an Annual Summit meeting. He had also addressed the Indian community in Kobe and spoke about the inconvenience faced by the public due to demonetisation back in India. (Check NDTV and The Quint reports.)

Further, we performed a reverse image search of the viral clip's keyframes and found a longer version of the clip uploaded on ABP's YouTube channel on 12 November 2016. In this video, the first part of the viral clip appears between the 7.35 and 8-minute time mark, while the second part appears between the 8.25 and 9.37-minute time mark. These two parts have been merged to mislead the public.

In the unedited video, Mr. Modi can be heard saying, "Someone has no money for his daughter's marriage, someone has no money for his mother's treatment. But despite having many problems, people have welcomed the move (demonetisation). I salute them. For the betterment of the country, they are coming forward just like Japan did in 2011."

We watched the whole video and at no point did Mr. Modi mock the people who endured pain during the demonetisation. It is evident that the viral video has been doctored. Hence, the claim is false.
