Fact Check: Dua Lipa did not face sexual harassment in Jodhpur; viral claims are false

Hyderabad: Social media users are sharing a tweet carrying an image of Albanian singer Dua Lipa from her recent trip to India, with misleading claims.

The image was shared with the caption, “India remains the most dangerous country for women. Singer Dua Lipa was sexually harassed by men in Jaipur, Rajasthan.”

The viral image is being shared in the context of locals of Rajasthan escorting her to safety purportedly after facing sexual harassment on Jodhpur streets.

Dua Lipa, a popular pop star, spent her holiday in Rajasthan. On 24th December 2023, posting a picture of her in a room with walls adorned with Radha-Krishna paintings, she officially stated about her spending time in India.

NewsMeter found the claim to be false.

We started our investigation by keyword searching but could not find any report mentioning sexual harassment with the singer Dua Lipa. This indicates that no such incident happened. Had it been true, it would have caught mainstream media attention.

We found the same image on multiple media reports through an extended search. A report in the Free Press Journal titled 'Locals fail to recognize Dua Lipa as she takes a stroll on streets of Jodhpur; Netizens react to viral video dated 27th December 2023. India Today and The Times of India also carried the same report.

“In a viral video, Dua Lipa can be spotted casually strolling the streets of Rajasthan, dressed in blue jeans and a black t-shirt. Interestingly, locals seem to be unaware of her celebrity status and they fail to recognize her. Soon after the video surfaced, netizens trolled the singer and posted some hilarious comments. A user wrote, `Foreigners roaming around is too common in Udaipur, so no big deal and obv the locals won't be aware of Dua Lipa’," FPJ report said.

Hence, it is evident that the viral image does not show any disturbing sexual harassment incident.
