External affairs ministers tweet on Sri Lanka is fake

HYDERABAD: A screenshot of a tweet purportedly by foreign minister Dr. S Jaishankar claiming that they want to make Sri Lanka part of India, in exchange for help, has gone viral.

"If the people of Sri Lanka are agreeable, India is willing to proclaim that Sri Lanka becomes the State of India. As a result, India will be able to solve the gas, fuel, milk, food, fertilizer, and many other essential goods problems that the country is facing. Additionally, India will look after all the future issues of Sri Lanka too" reads the purported tweet.

FACT CHECK:

At first glance, several discrepancies can be noticed. The text contains several grammatical, syntactical, and punctuation errors which are not common. There is no comma between the words "milk" and "food". The sentence "an hand of survival to people of Sri Lanka" is grammatically incorrect. A tweet can contain a maximum of 280 characters. The viral screenshot contains 390 characters which are technically not possible.

The official handle of Dr. S Jaishankar nor its archived tweets in the Wayback machine reflected the viral tweet as well. Had such a tweet been made, it would have been reflected. No news reports that could support the claim were found either.

Furthermore, the High Commission of India in Colombo, Sri Lanka refuted the viral tweet by calling it fake. "This is completely fake and fabricated. We strongly deny its malicious contents."

It is clear that the purported tweet attributed to external affairs minister , is fake
