Hyderabad: An image reportedly showing the Vishwakarma puja being performed at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is going viral on social media.

A Facebook user who shared the photo wrote that not only ISRO, but IIT, AIIMS, DRDO, and BHEL were all performing the Vishwakarma puja. "This is the culture of thousands of years," he wrote in Bengali.

Fact Check

The claim is misleading.

NewsMeter performed a Google reverse image search which led us to the website yeddyurappa.in. The viral photo was published on the website on 30 September 2009. The caption read, "Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa performed pooja for Helicopter on the occasion of mahanavami Ayudha pooja before leaving Mysore Tour at Jakkur Helipad on 27.09.2009 (sic)."

Public TV, a Bangalore-based media organization, had, in a report from 2 January 2018, also used the viral image as a representative image. According to the report, BJP president Yeddyurappa was set to tour the state by helicopter.

We compared the viral image and the original image and found that in the viral photo, Yediyurappa had been cropped out. Apart from that, we found several similar elements in the two images.

It is therefore evident that the claim made through the viral post is misleading as the image of BS Yediyurappa performing a puja on the occasion of Mahanavami in 2009 has been shared as ISRO performing Vishwakarma puja.
